Interview with Karina Davis
How would you define STUDIO E?
STUDIO E is worlds apart from what people are used to in regular gyms and there's no other place like it in the city. My clients come from all walks of life, all levels of fitness. If you're one of those people who are looking for changes and who know they deserve better you're going to feel right at home at STUDIO E.
Explain your fitness philosophy.
I'm a person who works diligently to help my clients discover what they need to realize their fitness goals. Once we define their goal, I work even harder to bring their fitness dreams into fruition. Their goals become my goals and in that manner, STUDIO E now becomes defined by my client. If Client A needs to feel glorious in her wedding gown then STUDIO E is where she'll discover her beauty. If Client B needs to survive his hectic work life and find the person he used to be when he was younger, for him STUDIO E will bring him vigor, resilience, and youth. If Client C would like to be able to walk without falling, sit without pain, and to be able to carry a grocery bag up the stairs then for her STUDIO E becomes a place where she finds her balance, relief, and strength. And yes, if Client D wants to look hot in a bathing suit STUDIO E becomes a place where he'll be able to do that too.
What’s the difference between you and other trainers?
Often you'll hire a trainer to put you through workouts and that’s as far as it goes. To me that's like teaching a person the alphabet without teaching them how to spell. The workout is only part of the lesson. I teach you not only how to spell, but how to write the great American novel which is your body.
I'll guide you through learning how to fuel your body with proper nutrition, how to care for your body when it’s injured through therapy and massage, how to take your body to higher levels of performance in sports or other activities. I'll guide you on how to care for your body through yoga, or meditation.
Because I train one on one in a private studio when you and your body speak I will hear you. And I will create a strong, sound, healthy body that will take you through the rest of your years. You'll gain the knowledge on how to work out on your own, but you'll also have a guide to be there through injuries, pregnancies, and as you get older.
So is a client supposed to be a client for life?
Not necessarily. I've always felt that if after your time with me you still don't know how to put yourself through a proper workout then I'm not doing my job. My job is to teach you how to get your body to do what you want it to do. But it always evolves from there. Most clients choose to stay with me because they now want to put their strong bodies through more challenges such as learning a new sport like running or tennis. Others become pregnant or have to go through surgery and they need to learn safe but effective ways to work out their changing bodies. Others will remain simply because they have learned what to do but don't have the time to think about how to get that quality workout.
Why would I join your studio and not a regular gym?
Gyms are great places to work out but I think they're becoming the 'fast food' of fitness. Go to a gym and you'll find loud music, people crammed into classes or waiting for cardio equipment. You'll train with trainers who are so distracted by all of that that they can't concentrate on what should be their main concern-their client. You walk into my studio and it's just you and me. With space to play and put your body through what it's wanting so badly, a great workout.
I've also noticed that gyms love to offer a lot of extras to their members and charge them for it. You pay for an initiation fee in addition to your monthly membership. Then you decide to train with a trainer and you pay extra. Then the trainer offers you evaluations, nutritional consultations, specialized body measurements, or even specialized training and all that comes with an additional price! With me you pay my training fee and the nutritional guidance, body measurements, specialized training, or even therapeutic sessions are included because for me, fitness encompasses all of that. I have no initial or membership fee and if my client wants to use the pieces of cardio equipment in the studio to enhance their workouts they're more than welcomed to do so free of charge. I charge for training and give you a lot more; I do have a massage menu that's at an additional cost but that's because I don't give them myself. I have excellent massage therapists who I work with in a combined effort to make sure your body is getting what it needs.
So what kind of person comes to STUDIO E?
Let me just define the clients that already go to STUDIO E. They are clients who range from 24-87 in age. They want to lose or gain weight, feel better, feel stronger, feel stable, and feel healthy. They want to get rid of their pain, their fatigue, their insomnia, and their health issues such as high cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure and stress. They want to work out safely before or after the baby, the surgery, or for the first time ever without getting hurt or being yelled at or feel intimidated. They want to get better at their golf game, their run time, and their ski jumps. Most importantly, they are the people who have come to realize that their bodies are their most valuable possession, and they understand that proper care and treatment will help them avoid serious troubles ahead and make them happier all the way around.
Do you really care about people this much?
I'll just say one thing. When a client comes to me and tells me they've never looked better it really makes me smile. But when my client comes to me and tells me that they've never felt better, or that they are no longer in pain, or that they have become a different person because of what we have achieved together, well, that's just my life's reward.
